Emerald Expositions Expands Photo+ Group Portfolio with Formation of “Professional School & Sports Photographers International” (PSPI)

PSPI Association Makes Debut at WPPI 2016, Joins Extensive List of Emerald Photo Properties including PhotoPlus Expo, Photo District News, PDN Edu, Shutterlove and Photoserve

New York – November 4, 2015 – Emerald Expositions, a leading organizer of industry trade shows including PhotoPlus Expo and WPPI, has announced the formation of the Professional School & Sports Photographers Association (PSPI).  The new association will become part of Emerald’s Photo+ Group umbrella of photographic properties which includes Photo District News, PDN Edu, Rangefinder magazine, Shutterlove, and the online portfolio site, Photoserve.  PSPI, whose members represent the school and sports photography communities, will make its official debut at WPPI 2016 in Las Vegas, March 3-10.  A full day program of seminars and events for school and sport photographers will be scheduled as part of the annual wedding and portrait conference + expo held at the MGM Grand, along with additional programming as part of full WPPI conference programming. This education will be included in the Full Platform pass and offered at no charge as part of a benefit to Photo+ Group members.

 

Formerly the Professional School Photographers Association (PSPA), its board of directors were searching for an industry affiliate that had the strength and depth to properly support the needs of its members.  Due to its thriving photo industry trades shows, extensive communications network, large community of active members, and robust education program, Emerald Expositions and its Photo+ Group was best suited to support and expand PSPI.

 

“We are very happy to welcome members of PSPI to Emerald’s Photo+ Group family and encourage other school and sports photographers to join our expanded family,” explains Jason Groupp, The Photo+ Group director of education and membership who will also join the board of directors of PSPI.  “The Photo+ Group offers some of the most extensive educational programming anywhere and our active communities will help PSPI members acclimate themselves into our organization very quickly and take advantage of all the same benefits and opportunities as existing members.”

131 - Completed Solo Photo Book Month

NEW JERSEY - I finally completed and uploaded my first photobook. It is entitled "131" and was submited as my official entry for the Solo Photo Book Month contest. According to the website, it is the worst photo contest because there is no prize. I think it ranks towards the top of the list for 2011 as one of the best projects/contests I've partaken. It gave me a goal to take at least 35 photos in 31 days to create 1 pdf file. I had no issue with taking 35 days. The challenge was taking a photo each day for 31 days. There were some days that didn't seem to be interesting visually, or maybe it was more that I had not been motivated to capture anything that day. So I learned that sometimes, it is in the general or even mediocre things we do that can serve as inspiration. The finished work can be viewed here: http://sofobomo.org/book-647-131

Camera shortage

What did you just say? .... Camera shortage, no way! Well due to the unfortunate disaster in Japan, camera manufacturers such as Canon and Nikon have been affected. Camera bodies, lenses, and even certain repair parts are experiencing a delay in production.



Popular camera and video rental company, LensRentals, is also going through the pain of delays and shortages caused by this global supply chain. Lenrentals founder, Roger Cicala, wrote in a post entitled "Summer Shortages" how camera product consumers could and would be affected. As a result of the repair delays, Lensrentals have even picked up some laser collimators. You can read more about laser collimators in a post by Floyd Blue here.



James Kwantes, a writer for the Vancouver Sun, interviewed London Drug's President and CEO, Wynne Powell, in an article titled, "Supply Crunch coming for cameras, electronics from Japan."



Kwantes wrote, "Nikon, which is warning of camera shortages this summer, is another case in point, Powell said. The company had a lens factory near the epicentre of the quake. The firm was able to repair the crack in the floor and get the plant operating again, but had to shut down after running out of a small part that was supplied by a local family business.



'Equipment that’s made today is really world-based equipment, and a variety of small, cottage manufacturers make important components for it,' he said."



For some the solution will be to wait it out. For others it may be to scour the Internet for equipment still stocked in some vendors' shelves. I was recently looking for a Canon 5D Mark II, that up until before the earthquake was being sold on the Canon Direct Store. I thought it was a great buy for a refurbished unit at $2099. The price the Canon 5D Mark II seemed to be as high or even higher than when it was first released in the Fall of 2008. Before the earthquake it was common to see the camera body sell for $2499. Now it is $2699.

InPaint and Webinpaint software review

I was a bit skeptical about the before and after results I saw on the theinpaint.com website. It claimed to remove unwanted photos easily. Before downloading software that I may not eventually use, I tried a few photos for myself using the online software called webinpaint.com; the second reason was that I was trying this software from a laptop with Linux installed.

I downloaded a recent photo I took of model Jenny with fall foliage and decided what if I wanted to show the photo with just fall foliage. This was a good first test of the software and see if the claim could be proved.

The site could not be simpler to use. The first step was to LOAD IMAGE. Clicking on it allows you the option of uploading an image file (JPG) up to the site. I had no issues loading a 1.6MB file and no issues loading a 100K file. The next step was the highlight or "paint" over the area you want to remove and replace on the photograph. If you make a mistake, clicking on the "X" will clear the selection and you can select the object(s) again. To the right of the "X" is a number (clicking on the number reveals a slider that let's you adjust the brush size up to a maximum size of 50. I would recommend this for larger pixel photos as it lets you select a larger area (and decrease the time for you to select the unwanted object(s)). The easy step was to click INPAINT. The back end software and servers crunched away at the processing while I clicked on another tab to check email.

After checking email, I clicked back on the WebInpaint Beta tab. Here are the results:

To recap here are the steps using WebInPaint Beta in list format:
1. LOAD IMAGE
2. SELECT the object(s) from the image you want to remove by outlining.
3. (Optional) Click on the number to the right of the "X" to increase or decrease the size of the selector
4. (Optional) Click on the "X" if you need to clear the selection
5. Click INPAINT and wait until the image is transformed to the image you had in your mind
6. Click the disk SAVE icon to save the after photo. Remember to choose an alternate name or location as you may overwrite the original image

TOOL NOTES:
* Clicking on the "X" clears the entire selection

NOTE: The software itself is quite powerful but please respect photographers' and artist's copyright. Please also be aware of the law regarding copyrights where you live.

The Webinpaint Beta page states, "Typically the defect is repaired on the first try. However, you can experiment until you get the results you want." In my case the "defects" were repaired on the first try.

I tried again just to be sure. These are the results from a more complicated photo, where I removed the model on the right. It took a few tries because the empty space was filled with awkward elements until the fourth try where I thought the results are acceptable:

This software has revolutionized the practice of using scissors to "cut out" unwanted objects in photographs. Since it is software whether online or on your computer; it is cleaner, and takes a lot less time and really does remove unwanted objects. In certain scenarios, it is possible that using this software and additional cropping may do the job.
